Disclaimer (I’m based in the UK - but have helped students land places at Oxford, Cambridge and all other top-tier universities here).

It’s hugely important.

You only have one shot per year at applying to these institutions so make it count. Here is some advice:

  • Know their syllabus : Look through their course content and pick out stuff to discuss that particularly resonates with you
  • Know their tutors : If there is some interesting research/expertise the professors of this course have than also mention this
  • Demonstrate your passion : What evidence is there to show this is what you are destined to do?
  • Demonstrate your knowledge and experience : Coupled with passion it shows what you have done in this area
  • Declare your intent : Where will this degree course take you - what is the bigger plan

Oh. Excellent academic performance as well as evidence of success outside of this always helps haha.
