How should I explain low GPA when applying for graduate school (Stanford, MIT) for bioengineering?

Well - explain it only when asked. Otherwise don’t. No need to highlight a deficiency - it’s up to them to ask you - not for you to prompt them to think about it.

If you are asked:

  • Be honest - you chose to study broadly rather than in depth
  • Show humility - jury is out as to whether this was the best choice - because of course we all prefer ‘A’s’. But nonetheless it was an important lesson (explain the lesson learnt)
  • Focus upon your learning and how it bettered you

Apply these three strategies. You’ll do fine.
