The single greatest thing?
My folks got married at 11 and 13 the first time they saw each other. The village where my dad is from had no electricity and no doors and windows on the ‘houses’ and no running water until around 2008.
This is it: Basti in Uttar Pradesh:
So the single greatest thing?
I remember visiting this village when I was 18 years old. I met my direct cousin’Sita-Ram’.
He was about 5ft 7, malnourished, wearing stained charity clothes, bare footed and eating popcorn he kept in his right shirt pocket. He was literally the same age as me, couldn’t speak English and had no passport or any other kind of civic identity.
That’s when it hit me:
The single greatest thing my parents gave me given the village they came from was:
GIVE BIRTH TO ME IN LONDON, ENGLAND.
That changed my life irrevocably.
I hope to pay them (and India) back one day
