What does Twitter need to do to restart growth and reactivate its massive dormant user base?
Twitter is text based.
Writing something meaningful in 140 characters or less is actually quite hard.
Take that sentence above for example - I had to think about it. So what happens as a consequence? Much of the twitter cyberspace is filled with a ‘what’s what’ of any urban dictionary’.
Sub-cultural insular references such as ‘wats gd fm’ or ‘yh kl’ or ‘loooool’ alongside all kinds non-sensical streams of consciousness.
AND THAT WORKED for a while .
However then Snapchat came along - and Twitter’s primary regular user(s): The 12-19 year old bracket moved ‘with the times’. Twitter of course does have Periscope - a deeper part of the Twitter experience which has seen significant growth as the demand for ‘live streaming of your life’ increases.
But it doesn’t align well with ‘Tweets’ particularly and doesn’t appeal to the ‘kids’. Furthermore Facebook have just introduced live streaming in the US. How will this impact Periscope?
I think Twitter should rival Snapchat. Tweets with images and videos that disappear . It would run more in line with the immediacy of what the market seems to desire now.
And that coupled with Periscope would be IMHO a brilliant move.
