Will accepting a relatively low new grad software engineer offer affect my long-term salary growth?

Will accepting a relatively low new grad software engineer offer affect my long-term salary growth?

In the UK it wouldn’t - and I believe it’s the same anywhere.

It’ll only affect your career if you allow it to to the extend you devalue yourself in interview for future jobs.

That is the only time at which the ‘salary question’ will come up.

At that point DON’T:

  • Be apologetic
  • Act guilty
  • Explain why it was worthwhile to be paid less

DO:

  • Focus upon the value you added
  • Explain why your worth ‘$x’ more
  • Demonstrate your value with accumulated evidence

Following this strategy a good friend of mine negotiated a salary jump of $23k within 6 months of moving jobs.
